All markets balance supply and demand, exchanging money for labor, resources, energy and other forms of value. Some are more "free" or unregulated. Most are designed or organized around principles or priorities. Ours started out based on innovation, competition, profit, wealth and re-investment, all aimed at serving the public good. But it has gradually morphed into a pyramid scheme based on war, waste, speculation, advertising, subsidies (corporate socialism), lobbyists, bribes, white collar crime and corruption. Now, as if we had a gun to our backs, the planet is demanding we choose. If our tax, subsidy, trade and regulation policiies were reorganized around the principles of environmental sustainability, human rights and the rule of law, we would rapidly cut the 40% to 70% of the economy that is wasted, and we would begin to solve a whole host of problems, from health care to global warming. It shouldn't take us that long to think it over.
